Gallery Players were proud to present …

Sunday in the Park with George

by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine

(past show November 2022)

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Book by James Lapine

‘Order…Design…Tension…Balance…and Harmony’

on what was anything but an ‘ordinary’ Sunday!

Inspired by the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges SeuratSunday in the Park with GeorgeStephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s stunning masterpiece, merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art.

In the days leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, Georges Seurat is struggling to make meaningful art while maintaining a relationship with his lover, Dot. Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat’s artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat’s Great Grandson – named George and also an artist – finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past …

With Sondheim’s passing in November 2021 theatre lost a true ‘icon’. His shows have taken their place as ‘standards’, each demonstrating the power and potential of modern musical theatre. He proved that musical theatre could tackle serious subjects, be moving, thoughtful, beautiful and entertaining.
This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning musical has moved and enthralled audiences for nearly 40 years and has inspired a whole new generation of musical theatre, notably Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick… BOOM! which pays homage to Sunday in the recent Oscar-nominated Netflix film adaptation.

Well known for our productions of Sondheim’s most challenging shows, this really was one not to be missed!!
